Two new murals are up at Finsbury Park: one inside the Tube station, one on Wells Terrace. Six residents shaped them with artist Lydia Rose. Where to see them.

Two new murals designed with Finsbury Park residents have been unveiled at the neighbourhood’s Tube station. One is inside the station. The other is on Wells Terrace, just outside.

Six local residents worked with community artist Lydia Rose of Allie’s Art Club to decide what the murals should show, Islington Council said in a press release on 26 October. Banners came out of the same project.

Where to see them

  • Inside Finsbury Park Underground station: a mural of people waving under a sun and a rainbow, which the council describes as a welcome to people arriving in the area. The station serves the Piccadilly and Victoria lines.
  • Wells Terrace, outside the station: a mural of silhouetted figures, which the council says celebrates “the communities, cultures and connections” of the area.

Who made them

The project was led by Islington Council with Allie’s Art Club, with support from Transport for London. It was paid for from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, as part of wider improvements to Finsbury Park town centre, the council says.

“I hope local people feel a sense of pride and belonging when they see them,” Lydia Rose said.

“I’ve lived in Islington all my life and it’s a nice feeling to be part of something like this,” said Phoebe Smith, one of the six residents. “My first time seeing the completed mural I was lost for words, it’s just fabulous!”

The finished piece carries details from the group’s conversations. “I can see Rowans, the hairdressers, companionship,” Phoebe Smith said. “Maybe a few preconceptions about Finsbury Park will be popped by this mural.”

The Mayor of Islington, Councillor Rosaline Ogunro, said the murals “tell a local story in a way that only local people can”. Nick Dent, TfL’s director of customer operations for London Underground, said they “provide a warm welcome to everyone”.

What it means for you

  • If you use Finsbury Park station, the inside mural is on your way through. The Wells Terrace one is just outside.
  • If you live nearby, the murals are part of a wider Finsbury Park town centre programme. The council has not said whether more co-designed artworks are planned.
