Islington's switch-ons run mid-November to early December, Angel first. The 2026 dates are not out yet: here is what 2025 confirmed and when to expect them.

Islington does not hold one Christmas lights switch-on. It holds a run of them, town centre by town centre, starting at Angel in mid-November and finishing in early December. No 2026 date had been published by the council, the Angel BID or Angel Central as of 5 September, and on past form they will not appear until late October.

This page carries what is confirmed, what the pattern looks like, and where each date will be announced, so you can stop searching and check back once.

Has 2026 been announced?

Not yet. Checked on 5 September 2026:

  • Angel Central still has its 2025 switch-on page live, dated 14 November 2025, with no 2026 date on it
  • Angel BID’s news feed at angelislington.london has nothing newer than its 2024 winter items
  • Islington Council’s newsroom at islington.media has published no festive release for 2026, and its older ones have been archived off the site

That is normal for early September. The council’s 2023 programme release went out on 13 November, four days before the first event. In 2021 it went out on 10 November. Expect the 2026 dates in the last week of October at the earliest.

What 2025 confirmed at Angel

Angel Central’s own page for last year’s event gives the shape of the biggest one in the borough:

  • Friday 14 November 2025, 4pm to 7pm, in the Piazza at Angel Central, 21 Parkfield Street, N1 0PS
  • Entertainment from 4pm: luminous dancers, street performers and live music
  • A short performance from King’s Head Theatre’s pantomime cast and roaming performers from Little Angel Theatre
  • The switch-on itself at 6.30pm, with Santa
  • Children could enter a competition to press the button
  • Santa’s grotto opened the next day, 15 November, the first time Angel Central had run one

Crucially, the Angel switch-on has historically lit more than the shopping centre. When Father Christmas flicked the switch in 2016, the council’s release said that, in partnership with angel.london, “the lights on Upper Street, Chapel Market and Liverpool Road will become illuminated” at the same moment (Islington Council, archived 2025). If you want to see Upper Street lit, the Angel event is the one to go to.

The borough programme, as it last ran in full

The most detailed roster the council has published is its 2023 release, issued on 13 November 2023. It is stale as a set of dates, but it is the clearest statement of which town centres get an event and roughly when:

  • Angel town centre, Friday 17 November, 5pm to 7pm, with King’s Head Theatre panto performers, local choirs and festive goody bags
  • Islington Green and Camden Passage, Saturday 18 November, 12pm to 5pm, the “Glow in the Angel” seasonal spectacular
  • Nag’s Head Shopping Centre, Holloway, Saturday 18 November, 2pm to 5pm, switch-on, live music and free mince pies
  • Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, Saturday 25 November, 1.30pm to 4.30pm, with Ms Santa and music
  • Navigator Square, Archway, Wednesday 29 November, 12pm to 7pm, with a festive market and Christmas crafts
  • Whitecross Street, Friday 1 December, 4pm to 6pm, mince pies, face painting and a market
  • Chapel Market, Saturday 2 December, 12pm to 3pm, with the Market Trader of the Year award announced on the day
  • Caledonian Road, Saturday 9 December, 1.30pm to 4pm, with a festive market

Two things have held steady in every programme we can check back to 2016: Angel goes first, and the Mayor of Islington switches on most of the others. The Mayor for 2026 to 2027 is Councillor Rosaline Ogunro, with Councillor Jilani Chowdhury as Deputy Mayor.

Parking and getting there

Every one of these events is on a high street with controlled parking, and the switch-ons fall inside controlled hours. Take a bus or the tube.

Angel Central lists buses 4, 19, 30, 38, 43, 56, 73, 153, 214, 274 and 341 along Upper Street and Liverpool Road, and Angel on the Northern line or Highbury and Islington on the Victoria line and Overground.

If you must drive to the Angel event, note that Angel Central’s own site contradicts itself on price. Its parking panel gives £5 an hour for the first two hours, £4 an hour after that, and a £30 capped day rate for its 27 spaces off Parkfield Street via Berners Road, while the switch-on event page says “underground parking is a £20 per day fee”. Check the barrier tariff before you commit. Street parking is the more expensive option in any case: our Islington parking page explains the emissions-based tariff, which pushes a diesel well past £14 an hour in a short-stay bay.

Check the roadworks and travel page before you set off, and the tube and train times page for the last services home.

What is still to be confirmed for 2026

  • Every date. Nothing has been published for Angel, Nag’s Head, Archway, Finsbury Park, Whitecross Street, Chapel Market or Caledonian Road.
  • Which town centres get an event at all. The 2023 programme ran to eight events. In 2025 the council listed five festive events with Santa, in Archway, Whitecross Street, Clerkenwell, the Cally and Chapel Market, on its Islington Life site, while the Angel switch-on was run by the shopping centre. The 2025 dates are on our Islington Christmas markets page.
  • Whether Santa’s grotto returns to Angel Central, and what it costs. It was new for 2025; see Santa in Islington.

Expect the announcements in late October. Until then, the things to do in Islington page covers what is already on, and our pantomime and Christmas shows page has the theatre dates, which are already confirmed.
