Every Islington bank holiday pushes collections one day later, so Friday becomes Saturday. Garden waste is £77.85 a year, bulky waste starts at £32.46.

Islington collects recycling, food waste and rubbish weekly from houses and converted flats. Garden waste is fortnightly and costs extra. Everything goes out at ground level at the edge of your property, and recycling is not optional: Islington is one of the few councils in England where leaving a recyclable item in your rubbish is a finable offence.

Two things the council’s collection-day checker will not tell you. Every bank holiday shifts the whole week, and if you live above a shop on one of 36 main roads you have a fixed window, sometimes after midnight, in which your bags may be on the street at all.

Everything below was read from Islington Council’s own pages and the North London Waste Authority’s on 1 September 2026.

What goes in which container

Key to the containers Islington collects from houses and converted flats. Clear bag or green box for mixed recycling, weekly. Green kitchen caddy and secure outdoor container for food waste, weekly. Your own bag or bin for rubbish, weekly, with no free wheelie bins supplied. Green or brown hessian sack for garden waste, fortnightly on a subscription costing £77.85 a year. Communal bins on estates and in blocks of flats.

Islington runs a single mixed recycling stream. Plastic, paper, cardboard, metal and glass all go in the same clear bag or green box, with no separate paper collection, as set out in the council’s container guide.

Free clear recycling bags and compostable food waste liners are handed out at libraries, six community centres and ten estate concierge offices. The community centres are Brickworks on Crouch Hill, Elizabeth House on Hurlock Street, Jean Stokes on Carnoustie Drive, Mildmay on Woodville Road, Vibast on Old Street and Whittington Park on Yerbury Road.

The council will not give you a container for rubbish. Its houses and converted flats page says plainly: “We cannot provide free wheelie bins or dustbins.” Green boxes, kitchen caddies and outdoor food containers are free, ordered through a My Islington account.

The times you have to hit

The council gives three different deadlines for three different services, and it contradicts itself on the main one.

What Out by Source
Recycling, food waste and rubbish 6am Houses and converted flats
Recycling, food waste and rubbish 6.30am Compulsory recycling
Garden waste sacks 9am Garden waste recycling
Bulky waste items 7am Bulky waste

Two live council pages give the doorstep deadline as 6am and 6.30am. Work to 6am and the half-hour argument never arises.

To find your own day, use the council’s collection day checker. It asks first whether you live in a flat above a shop, because those addresses are on a completely different timetable.

Recycling is compulsory here, and fines are possible

Islington has made household recycling a legal requirement rather than a request. The compulsory recycling page states that you must not put anything in your rubbish that the council collects for recycling, and that this covers mixed recycling, food waste and garden waste where you have those services.

Recycling advisors can issue fines. The council says they will do so only as a last resort, after visiting to check the household has the containers and information it needs, and only where someone is “deliberately not recycling”. The rule applies to every household in the borough, including flats on estates with communal bins and chutes.

The council’s stated reason is money. It describes Islington as “the London borough hardest hit by cuts from central government” and says recycling is cheaper than disposal.

Bank holidays: everything moves one day later

This is the recurring change and it is consistent. On a bank holiday Monday there is no collection at all, and every collection that week runs one day late. Friday’s round becomes Saturday’s.

The council’s bank holiday services page set this out for the August 2026 holiday:

Usual day Collection day that week
Monday 31 August Tuesday 1 September
Tuesday 1 September Wednesday 2 September
Wednesday 2 September Thursday 3 September
Thursday 3 September Friday 4 September
Friday 4 September Saturday 5 September

The Reuse and Recycling Centre stays open on bank holidays. Access Islington hubs and the 020 7527 2000 customer line close.

Christmas

The council has not yet published its arrangements for Christmas 2026. Its Christmas opening times page still carries last year’s, when Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fell on a Thursday: collections stopped on those two days only, the Thursday round moved to Friday and the Friday round moved to Saturday, and normal service resumed on Monday 5 January.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday, so the pattern will not map across. Check the page again in December rather than assuming.

Last year the council collected real Christmas trees from outside homes on the usual collection day between 5 and 16 January. It has not yet said whether it will repeat that.

Garden waste costs £77.85 a year

Garden waste is a paid subscription, collected fortnightly, normally on the same weekday as your recycling and rubbish. The prices on the council’s garden waste page:

  • £77.85 for 12 months from the day you buy or renew
  • £38.93 if you receive Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment
  • one-off collections can be paid for separately if you do not want a year

One subscription covers three sacks per collection, and you can hold up to three subscriptions at one address. The reusable green or brown hessian sacks are free, up to three. The year runs from purchase, not from April, and there is a 14-day cooling-off period by email to GardenWaste@islington.gov.uk.

Garden waste from communal gardens on Islington estates is still collected without a charge. Soil, rubble, plant pots and large branches are not garden waste and will not be taken.

Bulky waste: £10.82 an item, minimum £32.46

The council charges per item with a floor and a ceiling, from its bulky waste page:

Items Charge
Up to 3 £32.46 (minimum)
4 £43.28
5 £54.10
6 £64.92
7 £75.74
8 £86.56
9 £97.38
10 £108.20

Ten items is the limit per collection, but there is no cap on how many collections you book in a year. Two securely tied black sacks count as one item. Households on Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support pay half, quoting the reference number from their benefit decision notice.

The council will not take builders’ waste, soil, anything longer or taller than six feet, fixtures attached to the property such as toilets and doors, or unbundled broken furniture. Items go out at ground level at the front by 7am, and may be left on the pavement as long as they do not block it.

Missed collections

Report through a My Islington account or the Love Clean Streets app, which the council names as the quickest routes on its report a problem page.

Islington publishes no deadline for reporting a missed collection. Several councils give you one or two working days. Islington does not say, so report it the same day and keep the reference.

If you cannot put containers out yourself and nobody can help, the council runs assisted collections. That one is not online: phone Access Islington on 020 7527 2000.

The tip: Hornsey Street, open until 8pm every day

Islington’s Reuse and Recycling Centre is at 40 Hornsey Street, N7 8HU, phone 020 7464 2225. It is run by the North London Waste Authority, whose site page gives the hours:

  • Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm
  • Sunday and bank holidays, 8.30am to 8pm
  • closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day only

That makes it open on Boxing Day and on every bank holiday in the year. A barrier controls vehicles at the entrance. Arriving within 15 minutes of closing with a full load, or behind a queue, means you will not be let in.

Two limits worth knowing before you load the car:

  • DIY waste is rationed. Each north London household can bring hardcore, rubble, soil, stones, concrete, brick, sand, pebbles and gravel amounting to two 50-litre bags, four times in any four-week period. That cap is on the NLWA’s page, not the council’s.
  • There is no pedestrian or cyclist access inside the site. There is a separate drop-off point at the Hornsey Street entrance, but it will not take general household rubbish, rubble, soil, paint, cooking oil, gas bottles, large furniture, large appliances, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes or mixed household recycling. On foot, that leaves a fairly short list.

Garden waste can be taken to the site by car, or left at the pedestrian drop-off point.

Flats above shops: 36 roads with fixed windows

If your flat is above a shop or a business on a main road, you do not have a collection day. You have a collection window, and putting bags out at any other time is what earns a fixed penalty rather than a collection.

The council publishes the whole schedule on its flats above shops collection times page. It covers 36 roads, most of them with more than one window a day, and several of the windows fall after midnight. A sample of the busiest shopping streets:

Road Section Window
Upper Street (both sides) Highbury Corner to Angel station 6pm to 7pm, and midnight to 1am
Holloway Road Highbury Corner to Junction Road 5.30pm to 6.30pm, and midnight to 1am
Essex Road Balls Pond Road to Islington Green 6pm to 7pm
Caledonian Road Cottage Road to Pentonville Road 11.30pm to 12.30am
Chapel Market Liverpool Road to Penton Street 6pm to 7pm
Exmouth Market Rosoman Street to Rosebery Avenue 7pm to 8pm
Stroud Green Road Seven Sisters Road to Hanley Road 7.30am to 8.30am, and 8pm to 9pm
Old Street The roundabout to Whitecross Street 8.30pm to 9.30pm
Farringdon Road (one side) Margery Street to Vineyard Walk 8.30pm to 9.30pm, and 1am to 2am
York Way Pentonville Road to Camden Road 9pm to 11pm

Check the full table for your own stretch: windows change part-way along the same road. Blackstock Road has a 7am to 8am slot between Seven Sisters Road and Ambler Road, and only an 8pm to 9pm slot north of Ambler Road.

The council is currently installing on-street food waste bins for flats above shops, so that those households can recycle food waste too. It has not published a completion date.
